The simple heating coil is the heart and soul of every e-cig. This is the point at which the e-liquid is converted into the vapor that we inhale. In the vast majority of e-cigs, this will be a simple piece of wire wrapped into a spring. The total length and thickness of the wire will determine the resistance of the atomizer. The longer the wire is, the higher the resistance, and the thicker the wire is, the lower the resistance. The overall mass of the wire (thickness x length) will determine how much current (wattage) will be required to heat the coil up to the proper temperature. If this is starting to sound complicated, we haven’t even scratched the surface yet when it comes to how these factors effect vapor production, flavor and battery stress. Wrapping your own coil for a rebuildable atomizer requires at least a rudimentary understanding of these principals.
With the rampant popularity of these rebuildable atomizers, there are those who have elevated coil wrapping to an art form. The first thing that comes to mind when I see some of these coils is wire-wrapped jewelry. All of the above-mentioned factors come into play with these exotic coils, as well as another; wicking. A lot of these coils are actually self-wicking to a certain extent, leading to more power that can be pushed to the coil without causing a burnt flavor. There’s really not much more I could say without going pretty in-depth into electrical engineering and thermodynamics. Like most art forms, it’s for the artists to understand their craft, and for us to enjoy the aesthetics. And without further ado, some #coilporn.
